Handmade quilts bring so much character to a room and I think every home should have at least one!

They're great for keeping you cosy on a cold night, snuggling under on the sofa, taking in the car, on picnics – anywhere you like....

I make my quilts to be used and loved, whether that means they are used on a bed or get dragged around everywhere by the kids (like ours!) With a little care they will last a lifetime and perhaps even become a family heirloom.

The process of making a quilt can be quite lengthy. To begin with a lot of effort goes into the choice of colours and styles of fabrics – this is one of my favourite tasks, endless browsing and matching until I find the perfect combination. I can never tire of seeing all the gorgeous fabrics out there to choose from.

When I have the fabrics I am going to use, I decide on the design of the quilt and get ready to cut up the fabric into lots of little pieces, this stage can be very therapeutic! As I cut I start to get little stacks of neatly cut fabric pieces, all lined up ready to be transformed into something entirely different and unique.

Seeing the quilt top come together is very satisfying and I get excited every time, it's always a treat to see how it looks made up.

When I have pieced together the quilt top I attach it to a cotton blend wadding using machine quilting. This is what gives it a traditional quilted look and the stitching really helps to accentuate the pattern.

Finally I back the quilt in a co-ordinating fabric and it's finished and ready to be used – hooray!
